Lois Bender

Exhibition “2021”

Lois Bender, a longtime New Yorker, combines her art direction and graphic design background with fine art expression to produce a fresh synthesis of nature-based design and abstraction. Her brand GardenSpiritsNY Designs (est. in 1996) grew out of her Gift Industry experience and working on the Godiva Chocolates Brand. Bender’s art practice explores all nature themes in gardens, landscapes, etc. She has explored her themes at residencies in France, The Hamptons, NY, as well as Skowhegan and the Women’s Studio Workshop. With a BA from Hunter College and an MFA (Boston University), she teaches art and watercolor techniques in the Metro NY area and The Hamptons. She is an Adjunct Art Professor at Essex County College in Newark, NJ, with a studio in Manhattan and is an urban/garden sketcher who sketches nature in all its poetic variations.

My Paintings and Prints offer fresh mixes of abstraction and design, using both imprints and direct painting in my new work. The impact of Covid with no access to printing presses prompted me to return to printing with stencils. These “Florascapes” of falling flower shadows have been part of my art practice since I fell in love in the 1990s with the French art of Poichor and its use of stencils. Fusing the drama of shadows and flat negative-shaped silhouettes, flower shadows imply the lyrical afterlife and afterglow of the imagery that imparts a lasting imprint upon us.

Besides the lush complexity of plant life, the reflections of plants in water which create abstractions of rippling forms intrigue me as well, appearing in my paintings in shimmering metallics. Blending different mediums of drawing, watercolor, photography, and printmaking offers me the surprise of discovery I love to find in my work about nature. GardenSpirits have been a unifying theme throughout my art career. Inspired by my mother’s personna and her real name “Flora Bloom,” I have always gravitated towards painting nature, bringing her spirit closer to me!
