Exhibition “2021”

I live, and maintain my studio, in Santa Cruz, California.Born in San Francisco, I grew up on the peninsula in a nature-loving family.Art making has always provided a personal way of understanding and being in the world.

After attending UC Santa Cruz, I moved east to complete an MFA in Painting from Yale University.  Following school, I lived in Boston and Providence, Rhode Island where I taught painting, drawing and design at RISD and Brown University.

In 1992, after 3 years as an Assistant Professor of Art at Cornell University (including my first time teaching in Rome, Italy), I resigned from full time teaching to move back to Santa Cruz with my young daughter and partner. In addition to teaching at Stanford University, San Jose University, and The American University in Rome, I taught UCSC Art majors form 1992 to 2012.

I use a hybrid visual language and eccentric formats to playfully address the disruption and dislocation characteristic of contemporary life and the landscape we construct against a diminishing wilderness.

Making Art is a way for me to examine the ordinary and illuminate the familiar. In my work, as in life, the past permeates the present and the commonplace collides with the enigmatic and inexplicable.

As a celebration that 2020 has ended and that a new year is here, FLATFILE has launched a new online program title, simply: “2021.”

We invited artists to participate through a rolling open call, which remains open for the entirety of this year. From these submissions, our jury panel carefully selects new works to present on FLATFILE, with new works added throughout all of 2021.

The price of each artwork is a flat $2,021,

a discounted price from the actual value of each work, offered here, exclusively.
