Statement of this collection

These drawings are a visual reportage of my observations of natural remains and the detritus of modern-day living.

I observe raw beauty in the form and structure of humble organic entities of tree bark, seed pods, or dried weed skeletons when I look closely. I am inspired to work in watercolor on Arches paper and render the deep textures and patterns of a Cottonwood tree bark and the Buckminster Fuller-like structure of the Western Salsify flower. In graphite on paper, with great care I draw images floated on white ground in cinematic close-up, giving extreme intensity to the form, with the hint of a shadow to ground it to the paper and this world.

Some drawings focus on one element, and others speak to the dichotomy of contemporary remains of modern living, telephone wires, sponges, and bubble wrap with natural materials. The natural elements will assimilate into the environment, but the human-made materials of plastic will not.
