Emily Pavacic

Emily Pavacic’s love of creating embroidered drawings began with an unconventional drawing assignment while studying visual art and dance at Adelphi University.

Upon graduating, she decided to continue her studies and earned a Master in Art Education from NYU- the prelude to a 9-year teaching career. In 2022, she left teaching to pursue her passion to create art full-time. Inspired by the human experience and deep connections, her work is often described as tender and intricate.

Emily resides in Queens, NY with her husband and their sweet fur baby, Kiko.

Artist Statement

My work explores universality within the human experience and its ephemerality. If the earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old, and homo sapiens have existed for about 300,000 of those years, that means we as humans have only inhabited this planetary body for about 0.007% of the lifespan of earth- a blink in the cosmos.

Despite our brevity as a species, our experiences are significant. I seek to create self-reflective work about contemplation, struggle, the attempt to heal oneself, deep connections, and times of celebration. My pieces consist of labor-intensive and meditative hand-stitched drawings on textiles. Often, these works incorporate the use of paint, multiple layers of fabric for dimensionality, and eco-printing with flowers grown on my balcony.

My artwork is gestural and expressive, informed by my years of training and performing as a dancer, and each stitch is akin to a record of a second of my life in this mystifying universe.
