Incarceration, 2020$180.00Artist: Gordon Fearey I make paintings out of lines. When I use watercolor, the line breaks up into smaller lines as the brush runs out of paint. I use comb brushes, which are designed to break up the paint stroke into stripes of various thicknesses. When the comb brush is loaded with paint, it makes a unique set of stripes; as it dries out, the stripes change. I try to prolong the life span of each stroke before it falls apart. As a painter, I am influenced by my writing practice. The segments of line, and the transitions between segments, feel like words and sentences. Each segmented line is a journey of exploration with “go” and “no-go” decisions to be made every inch of the way. The route is both intuitive and responsive to stimuli, such as other lines. Recently, I have been bringing lines back to where they started, so the line is continuous and becomes a shape. These shapes create layers in the painting. I think of the layers as parts of a story. The painting is not complete until an event or a conclusion emerges from the structure of the layers, so there is a clear beginning, middle and end.
