Somebody’s Home 43

Artist: Elaine Mari

From my new series Somebody’s Home, intimate tender drawings in white chalk on black paper. I walk in my neighborhood every day. These little older homes tug at my heart. They are somebody’s home and I imagine that somebody is most likely home in these Covid days.

These homes, built in the traditional territory of the Musquem people, represent the hopes and dreams of Post WW2 generation of mostly white citizens and then those of new immigrants from Hong Kong and China. They also represent the pain of displacement and both family love and strife.

Now they are disappearing in the wake of a push to density in Vancouver and are being replaced by Condos.
