Ji Yong Kim

Ji Yong Kim is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY, U.S.A.  Born in South Korea, He received his B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design, and M.F.A. from Montclair State University in New Jersey. His recent artworks range from video works to mixed Media, investigating an intersection between traditionalimages of Buddhist art with images from contemporary popular culture.  He is fascinated by how these two opposite forms can adopt, merge, and blend into one another.

Use of symmetrical designs and patterns, Mandala-esque structure, and gateways found in his drawings and paintings often evoke visual languages used for spiritual contemplation.  Yet within this world, it is occupied with various imagery from popular cultures, ranging from advertisement, comics and anime, pop icons, quasi love poems, to virtual and cyber-space.  The multiple levels of diagrams can signify hierarchy in spiritual realm, layers of consciousness, or sublevels of human anatomy.

Most recently, Ji Yong Kim was an artist in residence in AIRY Yamanashi in Japan, Soaring Gardens in Pennsylvania, and Marpha Foundation in Nepal. He was a recipient of Civil Society Fellowship in Vermont Studio Center, and currently is an artist in residence in ChaShaMa Studio Space program in Brooklyn, New York.  He is an instructor of Foundation and Painting programs in Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey.
