SFA PROJECTS ART COLLECTIONS

TAWAN WATTUYA

This art collection is from the exhibition "PEEP SHOW ARCADE", a one-person exhibition of new paintings by Thai artist Tawan Wattuya at SFA PROJECTS

Brief excerpt from Paul D’Agostino’s exhibition essay, “Warp Pop Game Drop”:

“Tawan Wattuya’s ‘warp pop’ depictions in Peep Show Arcade dart in and out of warp zones at warp speeds, and they warp together imagery and aesthetic mannerisms from motley sources of pop culture and history. The artist’s experimentation with different media and treatments has allowed him to expand his repertoire of references while furnishing him with a newly informed, compositionally reinvigorated toolkit for bringing disparate allusions into energetic, enchanting confluence. Not unlike many video games, in a sense, Wattuya’s new works are time-traveling, space-bending picture planes. While the artist is wont to switch things up notably, and fruitfully, from one body of paintings to the next, viewers of Peep Show Arcade might want him to keep exploring the possibilities of his new ‘warp pop’ world a while longer. He has located, here, a paradoxically boundless sweet spot by painting himself into a new corner – one where he’s unlocked the pictorial cheat code he’s been painting for himself all along.”

Tawan Wattuya

b. 1973, Bangkok, Thailand Tawan Wattuya is best known for his distinctive approach to watercolour and thought-provoking subjects. His choice of medium is a clear attempt to convey the speed and dynamism he perceives in contemporary Thai society. He consciously chooses to view his homeland from a distance, studying the social and political situation from afar in order to explore with depth and understand both his hometown and the different places he encounters. It is clear that Wattuya's paintings are always poetic, personal, but nevertheless provocative in terms of his critical engagement with current issues. He is considered today one of Thailand's most unique and engaged painters. His works have been exhibited extensively all over the globe. ROUGE GALLERY: MONSTERS, VILLAINS & HELLBENT POLITICIANS (New York, 2018); QUEEN (Tokyo, 2019); BANGKOK ART BIENNALE (Bangkok, 2020); HATCH ART PROJECT (Singapore, 2019 & 2021). Tawan Wattuya currently lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand.
